Western Digital Launches WD Purple, A High Capacity Hard Drive For Surveillance Applications
Posted on Aug, 19, 2017
The primary function of a hard drive is to store user data like documents, images, audios, videos, and other multimedia files. There are many companies like Seagate, Toshiba, Transcend, etc, which manufactures various storage devices used in desktops, laptops, embedded systems, and consumer electronics applications. However, Western Digital, one of the leading manufacturers of hard drives, announced the availability of a special hard drive for surveillance applications. WD is already known for its wide range of products including storage devices, network products, media players, etc. With this, a user can easily access, save, protect, and share the data on multiple devices.
The 3.5-inch hard drive, by the name WD Purple™, is a high capacity drive, especially for various video surveillance units. The hard drive supports eight drives and up to 32 high-definition (HD) video cameras with a possibility of future expansion. It is available in capacities ranging from 1 TB up to 4 TB for 24*7 diverse security environments including Home and Small Business security-system environments.
According to Matt Rutledge, who is currently the senior vice president and heading the WD’s Storage Technology group, “By expanding our ‘Power of Choice’ product portfolio with WD Purple, we make it simple for our VARs, integrators, and consumers to select the right drive engineered for their application and validated with our industry-leading surveillance partners”.
The hard drive uses a unique mechanism, which makes it different from the normal hard drives. Such hard drives are designed to deliver critical video footage as and when required. However, with the recent advancement in technologies used in the camera, it is seen that network cameras are most often used. According to Jon Cropley, principal analyst for video surveillance at IHS Technology, network cameras are preferred over analog cameras, which is affecting the way the video surveillance is carried out. With the increased use of network camera having a dynamic range of functionalities, the requirement for storage of large-sized videos will also increase.
Some of the outstanding features offered by WD Purple hard drives are mentioned below.
- It includes a series of exclusive technologies including AllFrame, AFT, and exclusive firmware upgrades.
- The AllFrame uses the best of the ATA streaming feature to guarantee a seamless data flow and playback. This is achieved by implementing a proper cache management policy, which reduces the video footage loss.
- Upgrading the firmware ensures an uninterrupted surveillance.
- The Advanced Format Technology (AFT) helps in growing hard drive capacity by increasing the areal densities.
- The hard drives are very flexible incompatibility as they can be easily integrated into new or existing video surveillance systems using a wide range of chipsets.
The special WD Purple hard drive comes with a limited warranty of three-year. However, the price varies depending upon the capacity of the hard drive. For a 3.5-inch 1 TB drive, the price is $89.99. Whereas the 2 TB, 3 TB, and 4 TB drives, cost $119.99, $159.99, and $199.99 USD respectively.
